Ninth Play Monday!

Today we drove at high speed by radio control.

Yet in the Unit’s hall, Raquel already was playing with her car and made a grand entrance in the Recreation Room. All the clients started to peek so they could figure out from where was that sound, but they quickly focused on the car. Their faces where a bit confused “There’s a car going back and forth in the room… Why?”

Well, it wasn’t just one, but four! And the four cars entered in the “racing track” so it could be drove by our clients. We were all forming a circle, clients, health professionals and even Mr J.C’s wife, that decided to visit him and that wanted to join to our play. Let’s go?

The controllers were handed to our first four drivers. Ms M. got really excited, while Ms M.H got suspicious, but she decided to see what that was and if the car was really going to start moving. It was her first PlayMonday! Mr A. didn’t want to let go the controller since the moment we handed it to him and his car did one hundred rallies and high speed!

Although at the beginning it looked like it was hard for some of our clients to control the cars, bit by bit and because of their enthusiasm, controlling them began being a natural thing.

Mr J.C was a bit confused but his wife helped him and both drove at the same time. “Turn left! To the right! Be careful, we are going to crash!”
And so it was, four different “drivers” each lap, our clients played with the cars. Some said that they never played with cars like that “That one even turns on the car headlights!” said Mr A.

Ms F. started to think that each time that a car passed near
her, that it would collide so she would avoid them with her feet.

With the help of Victor, Mr M.M drove the car and because of his decrease in visual acuity he couldn’t know the directions of the car, so in the middle of all explanations and instructions Mr M.M laughed from all the enthusiasm!

After the training with the cars, we made a race to see with were the fastest cars to arrive to the finish line, but it wasn’t a real competition, we just wanted to play a little bit more.

This time we also had new Players: the Physiotherapist and Doctor Domingos who joined to our usual PlayMonday team!

Thank you to all of you!

#PlayMonday (28/03/2016)

In this month’s Play Monday we had some unexpected and unpredictable guests.

Lamb, Parakeet, Chicken and Dogs… Quite odd to a Health Unit, don’t you think?

The answer is no! When the objective of their presence is to make them laugh, interact or play. And for that, they took action without asking anything in exchange!
Their presence brings benefits in a emotional, physical and psychological level. Studies demonstrate that Animal Assisted Therapy allows reducing the blood pressure, reducing the hormones related to distress and raising the “good mood” compounds in the brain, turning it into an essential cardex in our institution.

Once more, the team work was important in the animal acquisition and in the execution of this play. All the collaborators were involved and helped turning this special moment funnier and unique.

After the afternoon snack, the clients went to the recreation room so they would participate in the dynamic planned on the weekly activity schedule, since this timetable was assigned to the Speech Therapist.

During this dynamic, unexpectedly, a chicken appeared to give the kick-start to our play. It was a little bit scared with the public in contrast to our clients that revealed enthusiasm and astonishment in their expressions! “What is a chicken doing were? Where did it come from?” Ms V. encouraged by us, got up from her armchair and picked up the chicken like she did many times in her life! After that, Mr M.C took the initiative and grabbed it by the wings without fear, petted it and evaluated if it was “good to eat” and if it had eggs or not!

Next, the chicken passed through some clients, petting and some laughs were heard in the UMDR! (Medium-Term and Rehabilitation Unit)´

A “Baaaaaa” was heard in the end of the hall, the lamb wanted to join the party and so it was… Since Mr M.C was “putting his hands” into it, e picked up the lamb and petted it, meanwhile the other clients started to interact with the animal, mentioning some knowledge and some memories.

The lamb and the chicken left the stage and it was the time to the dogs and the parakeet (inside a cage) to join our party.

In that instant, the clients were surprised, many smiles was showed, many arms and many hands moved naturally to pet the dogs that were in the room. Since the dog is a curious and docile animal, it sniffed all the room and the clients, receiving and giving all the care and kindness that it was given to it. Many memories of their loyal friends were witnessed in this play! Some clients threw the ball so the dogs would catch it, some clients called them…

An unexpected visit and that certainly provided a moment of joy and nostalgia happened when Nurse Marisol and Physiotherapist Sílvia went to Mr J.B.’s room with a dog called Muna. When he saw the dog, he became moved and it remembered his old dog. He petted the dog and it was such a joy!

And it was like this, a afternoon spent playing! This time, with special collaborators that brought happiness and innovation to our institution.

After many thoughts/opinions about the pros and cons of animal presence in an Health Unit, the Team (including the Infection Control responsible team) considered that this event, isolated, it would have less damage and it would be beneficial to our clients in a way to promote well-being and a life quality.

Eighth Play Monday!

Today our Play Monday almost filled the entire recreation room. And why?

Finally our so expected parachute arrived just at time to a play day. It was enough to see some smiles and some curiosity faces before we started this play. This time our team was bigger. Apart from our usual team (me, Raquel, Joana and Gabi that made her debut last Play Monday), Nurse
Raquel, Social Worker Cátia and auxiliaries Gertrudes, Jesus and Gina also joined us to play!
Joana, that is already an expert with parachutes, presented our play to the clients starting with the warm up. All of our clients and health professionals formed a circle, grabbing the parachute and moving it in a way that would look like a sea of flying colours. So many waves that sometimes we would not see each other, then when we “meet again” everyone would laugh.
To turn it into something funnier, we added a ball that was rolling on the top of the parachute. And so it was, with a ball that looked like it was flying and sliding at high speed and sometimes it would trick us and would escape. But that didn’t discourage anyone, specially our clients that during our play turned pro at mastering the ball and the parachute.
It was very gratifying to see the team that, between clients and health professionals improved it, because it was a teamwork play. An hour passed without noticing and a recreation room that amplified itself, it looked like it was a much better
place.

In the end, I asked Mr. A.G. what were his thoughs about this play and he told me with an enthusiastic look: “I liked it… I looked like a little kid”, and Mr. J.C said that “it was a very funny blanked that looked like it was moving by its own will. We could do this party often”, also Mr. J.F. said that “it turned the day lighter because it had many colours.”

Thank you to every of my co-workers that “surrended” to Play Monday.

In this Play Monday there are more images than words! Therefore, the compilation of all of the photographs that we took can be seen here:

PlayMonday – First time in Casével was like this…

After we’ve been aware of this project (PlayMonday) through an invitation from a nurse, Inês Banza, and because we thought it would be an added value, we decided to join to this project. We asked for information and after we gathered all the clarifications we needed, we proposed to start it in a pre-scheduled date in February.

Since “Playing” is a way to soothe all that results from the internment and that’s how we, as a team, interact with our clients in our daily routine, and providing a different and unexpected moment turned into a mission, which was a real challenge!

And since that group dynamics are included in our activity plan, we planned this activity in a way that would surprise the clients and that would be totally unexpected.

In this way, we considered that the snack time would be the best moment to do our PlayMonday. Although there were only 3 professionals that would participate in this Play, after the disclosure of the activity, most of the collaborators that were in service showed interest and they participated in this Play. This Play wasn’t only for the clients but also for everyone that collaborated in it.

When the clients were prepared to their snack time, already sit around the table, one of our technicians appeared suddenly while hitting two pan lids against each other, marking the beginning of the Play. Simultaneously, people began to hear, loudly, the song “Happy”… And balloons popped up, the remaining collaborators brought them in bags and released them over the clients. And with that, the magic happened…

We didn’t how they would react, but we know that we should let the play flow in way to give them a good moment. From grabbing the balloons to throw them in the air or even pop them, everything happened!

“I wasn’t expecting this surprise”“Beautiful”
“We felt happy”
“We had fun”
“Total surprise”
“Entertainment”

These were some of the many expressions used to describe this moment.

It was notable that this moment was unexpected to our clients and it was definitely a moment of distraction and amusement. And as prescribed on PlayMonday’s Cardex, it was administrated a big dose of joy during the snack time and it had the estimated effect. And that joy was transmitted to our team, as secondary effects.

We left the photographic and video records because “a image worth more than one thousand words”.

We would like to thank to Inês Banza who is the head nurse of this pioneer project in healthcare institutions here in Portugal and we congratulate her for this iniciative.

And most of all, we congratulate the wonderful team of Unidade de Média Duração e Reablitação da Fundação Joaquim António Franco e seus Pais, for their collaboration and participation in this play time.

Seventh Play Monday!

Another Play Monday! And this time it was special because we had the participation of Nurse Coordinator Gabi and missionary group of students from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, who are running across Portugal thanks to “Missão País 2016”, so, there were many people who wanted to play!

Our Plays during this day were: the “fan and feather” game. With the help of the fan we had to make the feathers fly without touching the floor and we also played the “Shell game”*.
We organized the clients in two groups (a group for each game) and we started to distribute the fans and the cups between the clients and we invited them to play. Mr J. grabbed the fan with a huge enthusiasm and there was no feather who could escape him. Mr A. grabbed the fan with
some mistrust and reluctance, but first he only watched the game. Ms. M and Ms. J were mastering the fan technique, but they were having some communication trouble with the feathers. They are too light and sometimes they fall too quickly. But this time we had the precious help of three missionaries that helped keeping the feathers in the air. And after many tries, our players made the room being full of colourful feathers that were flying through the air. What seemed hard turned into something so easy.

After a talk with Mr. A, he told me that he preferred to switch plays because the “Shell game” seemed funnier.
And so it was, with three cups and a ball, the clients played with each other’s and with Joana and Raquel. A game that requires a good memory and concentration… And now “In which cup is the hidden ball?” Joana asked to Mr. A, that pointed to one of the cups, after thinking for a moment. Right in front of them Mr. J is playing with Raquel and at their side Mr. J.E that never missed one!

Apart from finding the ball, we wanted that the clients also “mixed” the cups and asked “Where is the ball?”. That way, things got funnier and interesting for them. After that, Raquel presented the game to Ms. M.A and although she couldn’t “mix” the cups, she always found the hidden ball. It was Ms. M.A’s first Play Monday and it was such a joy that she liked it.
Then the clients switched games, so everyone could try both games. In the end, everyone had their favourite and each one spent more time playing the game that each one liked the most.

And these were our PlayMonday minutes where we transformed moments. Thank you to my co-workers and to the missionaries that, even without knowing us, they participated in this Play during this day.

*Translator note: This game can also be known as Thimblerig, Three shells and a pea or the old army game

Sixth Play Monday!

On our Play Monday this month, we're all putting our best foot forward - literally!

We played with balls!
In the beginning we started by making a circle and we explained the activity to the clients, that weren't very excited about it. It looked like it was only me, Ângela, Raquel and Joana who were playing.
After a while, gradually, and when the balls started to roll to the middle of the circle, between our feet, everything turned more interesting.

So, at first, our Play consisted of using the feet to make the ball spin between everyone, without a sequence, as a warm-up. After that we introduced another ball and it got funnier. The clients were more focused in not losing the opportunity of touching with their feet in the balls, and that wasn't even a problem for those who have little mobility, since we found a way that every feet could play with our help.
What captivated them the most was seeing two balls constantly colliding in an unexpected way. And in this part, we finally started to hear them laughing.

Then we played with our hands. One of the balls had to run across all the clients by using the hands, while the other ball had to run across all the clients by using their feet. It was a messy and fun way to play while all clients were focused on the two balls.
The next Play was throwing the ball to the person that was in the middle of the circle, that it could be Raquel or Joana. Me and Ângela we're motivating and helping the players in their launches. And they did it very well! Mr. J.C. said that the funniest part was when he hit Raquel's head!
In this Play Monday two new clients joined our Play. In the end of the Play Ângela asked if they liked and both liked it a lot.
Ms. J.R said that she was certain that she would hit the ball, since she only has one leg she wouldn't get confused. The ended the sentence with a smile (This lady had her inferior limb amputated a year ago). Mr. A.G. in the start was really shy because he had been introduced to the group on that day, but in the end he revealed that he had a good right foot for kicking the ball.

We ended with a big applause from everyone to everyone!

Thank you to all Players.
